The Paris Exposition Internationale

Another postcard from the 1937 International Exhibition in Paris.  This one shows the Swiss and Italian Pavilions, and is not so dramatic as the other postcard I have of the exhibition.

Sunday stamps

My choice for this week's free theme is prompted by a story in the news this week about the head of a tattooed Maori Warrior, found in storage in a university in Birmingham, being ceremoniously returned to New Zealand (link to story).

The stamp (above) was one of the definitives issued between 1970 and 1976.  Two more stamps from the same series featuring Maori items are below.
(btw if the theme tattooed comes up, I shall have to post this stamp again :) ).

The Paris Exposition Internationale

Postcard of the 1937 International Exhibition in Paris.
The exhibition of 1937 was the last of the 5 international exhibitions in Paris (the others being in 1855, 1867, 1878, 1889 and 1900).  The exhibition opened on 25 May 1937 and ran until the November of that year.
Interesting in this postcard is the German pavillion on the left directly facing the Russian pavillion on the right.

I'm not sure if this might be Notre Dame (Paris).

Sunday stamp(s)

For this week's theme of cars, this 6d stamp from September 1966 was one of a set of 4 celebrating British Technology.  This was the only one in the set to feature cars (the others were Jodrell Bank, a hovercraft and Windscale).
I wish whoever collected this had left it on the envelope, from what remains the cancellation would have been interesting.

a rural scene

Probably near Bolzano (Italy) as this picture is near the snap of Belzano in the album.  From a holiday taken in 1950.

in northern Italy

in 1950.  Selling soles.  That might be a railway crossing barrier in the background.

Another snapshot from the 1950 tour visiting Switzerland and Italy. Written as 'Belzano' on the album page, I think this is 'Bolzano'  (wiki link).

Sunday stamps

I'm back into my accumulation of Egyptian stamps and covers for this week's theme of industry. This set on the FDC are for transportation and communication, which broadly speaking can fit with an industrial theme, and were issued on 23 July 1959 to commemorate 7 years since the revolution of 1952 (when King Farouk was overthrown).

A keen eye will notice the typo on the FDC, which was probably quite common and most likely doesn't increase the value at all.

I like the design of the special first day cancellation, V in Arabic is the number 7.

. . .

Maybe in Switzerland, maybe in Italy, in 1950.  As one of the signs on the hotel is 'Konditorei' (cake shop), then maybe they travelled into Austria too.

on top of the world

Taken in the Dolomites in 1950.

The tour arrives in Italy.
I'm not sure that a b&w snapshot captures how spectacular it must have been, although even such a small picture is quite dramatic.

Another snapshot from the 1950 holiday to Switzerland and Italy (later in the week).  This shows the station (wiki link).

Lake Lucerne

These two views of Lake Lucerne, Switzerland, were taken on a group tour in 1950, and these snaps found their way into an album.  More to come . . .

This second snap looks as if it were taken from a moving vehicle, I think the tour group travelled by coach.
