Rock Ferry Pier

These two snaps, taken in 1939, belong to the same album as yesterday's picture of HMS Conway.
According to wiki, the ferry service was discontinued at the end of June 1939. (wiki link)

Here's a link to more info on the S.S Storeton, which was in service between Rock Ferry and Liverpool.

HMS Conway

This photo comes from the same album as yesterday's pictures.  HMS Conway was a school ship and was moored at Rockferry, Birkenhead.

RMS Mauretania

There were two ships named RMS Mauretania, this is the second one, completed in 1939.  It was the first ship built for the Cunard White Star Line (after the merger of the Cunard and White Star lines).

These photos are in an album dating from 1939 (on into the 1940s), and so I'm presuming that the 'author' of the album is indeed referring to the maiden voyage in 1939.

This last picture is a zoomed in version of the first photo.

No doubt this is a famous liner, but unfortunately I don't know her name.
Snapshot from the late 1940s/1950s.

Sunday stamps

This set of British Wildlife dates from October 1977.  I like the colours and the white background, and that they were issued as a strip of 5.

holiday snaps (11)

Another scene from a market place, nice to have the detail of the lady and the stall, and the sign.

holiday snaps (10)

These young ladies travelled to Belgium and the Netherlands in the 1950s.  Of their holiday snaps seen so far, they have been in Belgium, maybe they crossed the border by the time they posed for this picture.

holiday snaps (9)

Here are our young travellers standing by a war memorial.  I presume this to be in Brussels (based on the other photos), could it be another view of Martyr's Square?

Edit:  thanks to Rob for the correction:
'No, it's the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near the Royal Palace in Brussels'.

holiday snaps (8)

Thanks Rob for identifying yesterday's square in Brussels.  Here's another one, the building (behind the bus) is not the same as yesterday's, although I thought at first the girls might just have moved a little further away for the 'next' photo.  This square has a statue, but not much can be seen of that in the snap.

Edit:  I think I've found this one, it looks like the 'Grote Markt' Square, Mechelen, here's the link to google maps.  I can't see if the statue is still there today.

At the flower market, maybe in Brussels (given the location of the snaps shown last week).

holiday snaps (6)

More of the holiday snaps from the 1950s when two young ladies from the UK visited Belgium and the Netherlands.  They may be drinking Navy's Pale Ale.

Sunday stamps

For this week's theme, this minisheet was issued in 2002 by Alderney to commemorate the Queen's Golden Jubilee.  I like the vintage image.

holiday snaps (4)

1950s holiday snapshot, a street in Belgium, in fact she may well be in Brussels given the location of the previous 2 snaps.

holiday snaps (3)

Probably a famous bridge and monument.  If you know which one, please leave a comment.

Edit: thanks to Rob for identifying this as 'the Martyrs' Square (Martelarenplein) in the centre of Brussels'. Scroll down the comments for the link to the google map.

Might this be Antwerp?
There is a (country letter) B on the car.

Edit: thanks Rob for identifying this as the 'Grand Place (Grote Markt) in Brussels'.

Some time in the 1950s, two young ladies from the UK travelled to Belgium and the Netherlands.  I have some of their holiday snaps.

Sunday stamps

These Rupert Bear stamps are on a cover from 1993, which is a something of a hybrid, one stamp from the UK and one from Guernsey, and must have been collectable via the newspaper.
If you'd like to know more about Rupert the Bear, here's the wiki link.

Sunday stamps

For this week's free choice, I ended up with 3 'stamps'.
Firstly a cover from July 1966 with stamp and cancellation to match.

The Post Office Tower stamp was issued for the opening of the Tower on 8 October 1965.   It was opened to the public on 16 May 1966, and this cancellation was on mail posted there from 19 May 1966 to 5 May 1968.  (From 6 May 1968 to 31 October 1971, the cancellation was transposed).  According to wiki, it was the tallest building in London from 1962 to 1980.  (wiki link here).

Secondly, the horse chestnut from 1974, which would have done very nicely last week, had I remembered where it was.

And finally, the case of the missing stamp, I got one of these this week . . .

. . .  as the postman said, 'They didn't even try'.  :)
